Firestone Green
Today,
major environmental concerns result in a strong commitment, within
the building industry, to provide long-term solutions that not only
save money by extending the life of the installed system but aim to
reduce the demand for energy and other natural resources and
minimize the environmental impact.
Because the environment matters
Firestone Building Products is committed to operate in an
environmentally responsible matter. An environmental management
system, which complies with the ISO 14001 requirements, has been
implemented throughout the company's manufacturing facilities. This
certification is a testimony of the company's environmental
awareness.

RubberGard EPDM is an inert roofing material with limited
environmental impact during manufacturing, installation and
use:
- The initial production of the membrane has a low embodied
energy number.
- The effectiveness of the EPDM polymer results in low quantities
of polymer being required to obtain proper mechanical and physical
properties.
- During the membrane's service life, no toxic substances are
released from the membrane, allowing collection and use of run-off
rainwater for household applications.
- EPDM is a very highly durable material: Firestone RubberGard
EPDM has outstanding weathering characteristics and a life
expectancy up to 50 years.
- In regions where Heating Degree Days exceed the Cooling Degree
Days, a black EPDM membrane on top of a properly insulated roof can
help to save energy and reduce associated carbon emissions.
- At the end of its service life, the membrane can be recycled
and re-used into walkway pads, road asphalt...

EPDM Roofing and Lining Systems, download the EPDM Sustainability brochure or consult the ERA LCA Study.
Firestone
UltraPly TPO is a heat-reflective and energy efficient
roofing membrane. This characteristic, together with the advantages
described hereafter, means that the Firestone UltraPly TPO
membrane can be considered as an ecological membrane.
- No plasticizers: TPO membranes are less susceptible to
weathering.
- No halogens: no toxic or corrosive combustion gases are
produced in case of a fire.
- Hot-air welded: no toxic substances are emitted during the
welding of the seams.
- Easy to recycle: cut-offs and scrap material generated during
production are entirely recycled within the production
process.
- UltraPly TPO membranes offer the required mechanical and
weathering performance even at lower thickness. The use of less
primary materials contributes to the care for the environment.
- The manufacturing process requires less energy compared to
other roofing membranes.

TPO Roofing Systems, download the TPO Sustainability brochure or consult the ERA LCA Study.
Compatible with 'green' systems
|
Due to ever increasing concern for the environment,
green roofs are becoming a regular part of our
landscape. Firestone RubberGard EPDM and Firestone UltraPly TPO
have successfully passed the FLL test for root penetration
resistance in green roofs. Both membranes can therefore be combined
with extensive green roof systems using lightweight and low
maintenance sedum vegetation.
The ecological benefits of a green roof system are numerous:
- Increased life expectancy of the roof
- Added value and aesthetics
- Lower energy costs
- Easy installation and maintenance
- Improved air quality
- Reduction of the urban heat island effect
- Storm water management
- Extra soundproofing and insulation
- New habitats for plants & animals
Firestone RubberGard EPDM and UltraPly TPO Roofing Systems can
also easily be combined with any type of solar
system. These Solar Roofing Systems provide savings on
energy costs and reduction of carbon emissions helping towards a
sustainable environment.

Lining membranes
Firestone EPDM PondGard and Geomembrane
are inert lining membranes with limited environmental impact during
manufacturing, installation and use:
- The initial production of the membrane has a low embodied
energy number.
- The effectiveness of the EPDM polymer results in low quantities
of polymer being required to obtain proper mechanical and physical
properties.
- The membranes do not contain any toxic substances and so,
during the membrane's service life, no dangerous substances are
released from the membrane. The Firestone lining membranes can be
used in contact with fauna and flora and to store water for
agricultural use.
- EPDM membranes can be used as a lining material in dung pits,
waste water reservoirs... helping to protect the environment by
avoiding any soil contamination.
- EPDM is a very highly durable material: Firestone EPDM
membranes have outstanding weathering characteristics and a life
expectancy up to 50 years.
- At the end of its service life, the membrane can be recycled
and re-used into walkway pads, road asphalt...
