Firestone roofing membranes are compatible with all types of photovoltaic installations, thanks to their high temperature resistance, wear and tear resistance and exceptional life-time expectancy.
Roofs today need to be sustainable. In addition to their primary function of keeping buildings waterproof, this often-overlooked area is now providing a prime opportunity to produce energy, collect rainwater, reduce noise and create habitats in urban landscapes, among others.
Photovoltaic (PV) installations have been gaining popularity in the last couple decades as a renewable energy source used to power homes, offices or even commercial and industrial buildings. There are three main types of photovoltaic systems that can be used on flat roofs:
- Penetrating system: solar panels are mounted on a rack support system that penetrates the roofing membrane. Detailing becomes therefore critical to ensure the watertightness of the roofing system.
- Non-penetrating system: solar panels are mounted on a rack support system that is installed on top of the membrane without anchoring to the substrate. PV systems are often held in place using ballast.
- Laminates: photovoltaic strips are adhered to the membrane.
When considering installing a PV system, building owners must first consider the roofing system, as the choice of roofing membrane is critical. A rooftop PV investment is typically based on a 20-year financial projection. Therefore, in order to maximize returns the roof must be able to support the PV installation for at least that period of time.
Firestone RubberGard™ EPDM, RubberCover™ EPDM and UltraPly™ TPO roofing membranes offer excellent weathering performance, first-class mechanical resistance, outstanding durability and can withstand very high or very low temperatures. Firestone also provides a variety of accessories that can be used to address the most complex details associated with the installation of photovoltaic panels.
Also Firestone offer polyisocyanurate insulation and high density cover boards that form a perfect match in combination with sustainable roofs under any Firestone Roofing System. The complete roof is guaranteed compatible and designed to the high requirements that our roofs nowadays ask for.
